Mela-s 13 - 18 : Agni Chakra

       13गायकप्रिया  gāyakapriyā


धीरभद्राख्य-गायकप्रिय वीरभद्रादि-पालितशरण |

dhīrabhadrākhya-gāyakapriya vīrabhadrādi-pālitaśaraṇa |


Translation:


dhīra bhadra ākhya gāyaka priya - O One dear (priya) to the wise (dhīra) singer (gāyaka) named (ākhya) Bhadra !

vīrabhadra ādi pālita śaraṇa - O One whose abode (śaraṇa) is protected (pālita) by deities led by Virabhadra !


O One dear (priya) to the wise (dhīra) singer (gāyaka) named (ākhya) Bhadra ! O One having an abode (śaraṇa), Kailasa, that is protected (pālita) by deities led by Virabhadra such as Nandi, Bhairava etc. !

  1. In the Tiruvilaiyadal Puranam, the episode ““Viragu Vittra Padalam” describes how Shiva helped his great devotee, a singer named Baanabhadra, from dishonour. When the king deputed Baanabhadra to face a great musician named Hemanatha, visiting Madurai, in a contest. Baanabhadra, fearing disgrace to himself and the country, sought refuge in the Lord. That evening, Shiva in the guise of a firewood seller, went to where Hemanatha and his disciples were, and sang and played his Veena, saying he was Baanabhadra’s disciple, who had been turned out by his Guru as his music was not good enough. Hemanatha was dumbstruck that a rejected disciple could make such music. Losing his nerve, he left the town right away. Shiva briefed Baanabhadra of the events in his dream, to his great relief and joy.

  2. In another episode "Tirumukam kodutha Padalam" in the same Tiruvilaiyadal Puranam, Shiva gives treasures from the Pandya king's treasury to Baanabhadra and when that dwindles, gives him a letter (Tirumukam) to produce before the Chera king Cheraman Perumal Nayanar, asking him to give riches to the singer. The Lord also informs the Chera king in his dream to receive Baanabhadra.

  3. The prefix "Baana" means bard, and Bhadra (Pattira in Tamil) is his name.


    14. वकुलाभरणम् vakulābharaṇam

देव-कुलाभरणोद्धारक-श्रीवसुदेव- कुलाभरण-नतचरण |

dēva-kulābharaṇōddhāraka-śrīvasudēva-kulābharaṇa-natacaraṇa |


Translation


dēvakula ābharaṇa uddhāraka śrīvasudēva kula ābharaṇa nata caraṇa - O One whose feet (caraṇa) are saluted (nata) by Krishna, the adornment (ābharaṇa) of the family (kula) of Srivasudeva , and who is the rescuer (uddhāraka) of the ornament (ābharaṇa) of the family (kula) of Devas !

Notes:

  1. The ear-ornaments of Aditi, the mother of the gods, were taken away by the demon Narakasura. Krishna killed him and restored the jewels to her.

  2. Sri Vasudeva is the father of Krishna.

  3. Krishna has worshipped Shiva many times. For instance, Krishna and Jambavati,  one of his queens, worshipped Shiva for a son and hence Samba was born to them.


15. मायामालवगौल māyāmālavagaula 

जितमाया मालवगौलान्तर्गत-माहेशाः त्वां विन्दन्ति |

jitamāyā mālavagaulāntargata-māhēśāḥ tvāṁ vindanti |


Translation:


māhēśāḥ - Your devotees

mālava gaula antargata - residing in (antargata) [places like] Malava and Gaula,

jita māyāḥ - having conquered (jita) worldly delusion (māyā),

vindanti - attain

tvāṁ - you.


Having conquered (jita) worldly delusion (māyā), your devotees (māhēśāḥ) who reside in (antargata) various places like Malava and Gaula, attain (vindanti)

you (tvāṁ).



Notes:

  1. “māhēśāḥ” means those worshipping “mahēśaḥ”, which is another name of Shiva. 


    16. चक्रवाक cakravāka

चक्रवाक-कुचार्धाङ्ग त्वत्कृपया शक्र-वाक्पति-सुरा नन्दन्ति |

cakravāka-kucārdhāṅga tvatkr̥payā śakra-vākpati-surā nandanti |


Translation:


cakravāka kucā ardha aṅga - O One who has Parvati, who has breasts (kuca) that are like Chakravaka birds, as half (ardha) of your body (aṅga) !

tvat kr̥payā - By your (tvat) grace (kr̥pā)

śakra vākpati surāḥ - the Devas (surāḥ) along with Indra (śakra) and Brhaspati (vākpati),

nandanti - experience joy. 


O One who has Parvati as half (ardha) of your body (aṅga) ! By your (tvat) grace (kr̥pā)

the Devas (surāḥ) along with their king Indra (śakra) and preceptor Brhaspati (vākpati),

rejoice (nandanti). [The epithet for Parvati describes her as the beautiful one with breasts (kuca) resembling Chakravakas - birds that are always found in pairs]


Notes:

Shiva as Ardha-nareeshvara, with Parvati as his left half

  1. Since Shiva protects the gods from all difficulties, they delight in His mercy.



    17. सूर्यकान्ति sūryakānti 

तेजसा जितसूर्यकान्त्या गौर्या ओजसाSतुलप्रताप  |

tējasā jitasūryakāntyā gauryā ōjasā’tulapratāpa  |


Translation:


gauryā - Along with Gauri,

jita sūryakāntyā - who has surpassed (jita) the brilliance (kānti) of the Sun (sūrya)

tējasā - with [her] radiance,

atula pratāpa - [you are] incomparable (atula) in your glory (pratāpa)

ōjasā - with splendour.


With your splendour (ōjasā), you are matchless (atula) in glory (pratāpa), accompanied by Gauri (gauryā), who conquers (jita) the glow (kānti) of the Sun (sūrya) with her radiance (tējasā).


Notes:

  1. Gauri is one of the many names of Parvati.

  2. One of the names of Parvati in The Lalita Sahasranama is "उद्यद्भानु -सहस्राभा" which means that she is as brilliant as a thousand rising suns.


        18. हाटकाम्बरी hāṭakāmbarī

शुभकर  हाटकाम्बरि-शराब्ज-निभकर  हतभक्त-परिताप |

śubhakara hāṭakāmbari-śarābja-nibhakara hatabhakta-paritāpa |


śubha kara - O One who causes (kara) welfare (śubha) !

hāṭakāmbari-śara - O One who has [Vishnu,] the one wearing golden (hāṭaka) garments (ambara), as your arrow (śara) !

abja nibha kara - O One whose hands (kara) are [lovely] resembling (nibha) lotuses (abja) !

hata bhakta-paritāpa - O One who destroys (hata) the distress (paritāpa) of devotees (bhakta) !


O One enabling (kara) good fortune and welfare (śubha) ! O One whose arrow (śara) is Vishnu who wears golden (hāṭaka) garments (ambara) ! O One with lovely lotus-like (abja-nibha) hands (kara) ! O One who destroys (hata) the suffering (paritāpa) of devotees (bhakta) !


Notes:

Shiva as Tripurantaka in Mamallapuram. One can see the form of VIshnu in the arrow

  1. The words “hāṭakāmbari-śarābja-nibhakara” can be taken as a single Samaasa (compound word) to mean “O One who has a lotus-like hand with the arrow which is Vishnu”.
