43. गवाम्भोधि gavāmbhōdhi
गवाम्भोधिः तीर्ण इव मया भवाम्भोधिः तव दयया |
gavāmbhōdhiḥ tīrṇa iva mayā bhavāmbhōdhiḥ tava dayayā |
Translation
dayayā - By the grace,
tava - [that is] yours,
bhava ambhōdhiḥ - the ocean (ambhōdhiḥ) of births (bhava)
tīrṇa - has been crossed
mayā - by me
iva - like
gava ambhōdhiḥ - the ocean (ambhōdhiḥ) of milk (gava) [was crossed].
By your (tava) grace (dayayā), just like (iva) the ocean (ambhōdhiḥ) of milk (gava), the ocean (ambhōdhiḥ) of births (bhava) too has been crossed (tīrṇa) by me (mayā).
Notes:
According to 'Sivapriya', the ocean of milk is a metaphor for all arts and learning. Just as Shiva gave the composer mastery in music, he also has assured him of salvation.
44. भवप्रिया bhavapriyā
इह प्रसन्नो भव प्रियतमया सह प्रमथप द्रागुमया |
iha prasannō bhava priyatamayā saha pramathapa drāgumayā |
Translation
pramathapa - O Master of the Pramathas !
saha - Accompanied
umayā - by Goddess Uma,
priyatamayā - [who is] your most beloved,
bhava - become
prasannaḥ - visible
iha - here
drāg - speedily.
O Lord of the Pramatha-ganas (pramathapa) ! Appear (prasannaḥ bhava) before me quickly (drāg), along with (saha) your most beloved (priyatamayā) Goddess Uma (umayā).
Notes:
Pramathas are the attendants of Shiva.
45. शुभपंतुवरालि śubhapaṁtuvarāli
सर्वशुभापं तु वरालिकाक्षं कुर्वनुग्रहं त्वां वन्देऽहं |
sarvaśubhāpaṁ tu varālikākṣaṁ kurvanugrahaṁ tvāṁ vandē’haṁ |
Translation
ahaṁ - I
vandē - worship
tvāṁ - you,
sarvaśubhāpaṁ - the Lord of Parvati, the all-auspicious (sarvaśubhā) goddess,
vara alika akṣaṁ - the one who has an excellent (vara) eye (akṣaṁ) on the forehead (alika).
tu - Now, please
kuru - give
anugrahaṁ - [me your] grace.
Notes:
‘kuru’ literally means do.
‘sarvaśubhā’ or ‘sarvamangalā’ are names of Parvati, meaning she embodies all that is auspicious.
46. षड्विधमार्गिणी ṣaḍvidhamārgiṇī
सदय षड्विध-मार्गिणि मनुजे हृदयग न कुर्वे सन्देहम् |
sadaya ṣaḍvidha-mārgiṇi manujē hr̥dayaga na kurvē sandēham |
Translation:
hr̥dayaga - O One residing in the heart [of everyone] !
sadaya - O One merciful
manujē - towards the person
ṣaḍvidha-mārgiṇi - who follows the six-fold (ṣaḍvidha) path (mārga) !
na kurvē - I shall not have [any]
sandēham - doubt [ in you].
O Resident of all hearts (hr̥dayaga) ! O One compassionate (sadaya) towards the man (manujē) who follows the six-fold (ṣaḍvidha) path (mārga) ! I do not (na kurvē) have any doubt (sandēham) in you.
Notes:
‘Sivapriya’ says that the six paths are ‘hasita, gīta, huḍukkāra, nṛtta, japa and namaskāra’, the rituals as per the doctrine of ‘nakulīśa pāśupata’.
The six paths could also be the ‘ṣaṇmata’, worshipping the formless Supreme in any of these six forms as codified by Adi Sankaracharya : Shiva, Vishnu, Sakti, Ganapati, Subrahmanya and Surya.
The six paths may also be interpreted as “ṣaḍ darśana”, the six theistic philosophies of the Vedas - ‘sāṅkhya’, ‘yōga’, ‘nyāya’, ‘vaiśēṣika’, ‘mīmāṁsā’ and ‘vēdānta’.
47. सुवर्णांगी suvarṇāṁgī
सुवर्णां गीतिं समुपदिश प्रथम-वर्णाङ्गीकृत-वैकुण्ठ |
suvarṇāṁ gītiṁ samupadiśa prathama-varṇāṅgīkr̥ta-vaikuṇṭha |
Translation:
prathama varṇa aṅgīkr̥ta vaikuṇṭha - O One who has accepted (aṅgīkr̥ta) Vishnu (vaikuṇṭha) as the first (prathama) letter (varṇa) !
samupadiśa - Impart [to me]
gītiṁ - music
suvarṇāṁ - with beautiful letters [i.e lyrics].
O One who has accepted (aṅgīkr̥ta) Vishnu (vaikuṇṭha) as the first (prathama) letter (varṇa) ! Impart (samupadiśa) to me music (gītiṁ) filled with beautiful letters (suvarṇāṁ) i.e. auspicious words and lyrics. .
Notes:
The letter ‘a’ is the first letter of the alphabet, as well as of the letters that make up the Pranava (A-U-M). This letter is synonymous with Vishnu. Since Shiva is the embodiment of the Pranava, he is said here to have accorded Vishnu the first place.
‘suvarṇāṁ gītiṁ’ can also be interpreted as ‘excellent music’.
48. दिव्यमणि divyamaṇi
दिव्य-मणिबन्धे बद्ध-नाग-कङ्कण भव्य-मणि-लसित-श्रीकण्ठ |
divya-maṇibandhē baddha-nāga-kaṅkaṇa bhavya-maṇi-lasita-śrīkaṇṭha |
Translation:
baddha nāga kaṅkaṇa - O One with a snake (nāga) as bracelet (kaṅkaṇa) bound (baddha)
divya maṇibandhē- to your divine (divya) wrist (maṇibandhē) !
bhavya maṇi lasita śrīkaṇṭha - O One whose beautiful (śrī) throat (kaṇṭha) shines (lasita) like a beautiful (bhavya) [blue] gem (maṇi) !
O One on whose divine (divya) wrist (maṇibandhē) there is a snake (nāga) tied (baddha) as a bracelet (kaṅkaṇa) ! O One whose beautiful (śrī) throat (kaṇṭha) shines (lasita) like a lovely (bhavya) blue gem (maṇi) !
Notes:
Shiva in the form of Vishapaharana - the remover of poison. It rests as a ball in his palm. |
One of the meanings of ‘śrī’ is poison and so ‘śrīkaṇṭha’ can also mean one who bears the poison in his throat.
